There’s been a lot of back and forth recently about Netflix’s future plans. Streaming movies over the Internet has become a popular feature among those who use it and may even outpace DVD shipments for those users this year. And comments a few days ago by the company’s chief financial officer, Barry McCarthy, indicated that a streaming-only subscription option was forthcoming. This has led some to believe the move to Netflix as a streaming service is fully underway.
But as Terrence Russell wrote for us yesterday, not so fast. Other comments made by McCarthy at the same event indicate that Netflix is going to take things slow with streaming and that it views streaming as more of a supplement to its core DVD-rental-by-mail business. So which is it?
Well, as with most things these days, we turn to Twitter for the answer. “Contrary to what you may have heard or read, Netflix is not abandoning the red envelope! DVDs are still central to Netflix,” a tweet from Netflix’s official account read a few hours ago, as Hacking Netflix caught.
So there you go. Viva la red envelope! (At least for now.)
